Dubost Colas Pradel was established as a manufacturing company in 1920, and entered into the trade register in 1921, its activities listed as “Manufacture and assembly of cutlery

Pierre began researching bevelling (bevelled blades are ground with zero bevel to create the sharp edge); this manufacturing stage could not be done by Pierre and Marcelle in Viscomtat, because the village did not yet have electricity. The blades were therefore sharpened in Thiers, on the banks of the Durolle river. Pierre would collect the blades by bicycle, folding them into jute bags hanging from the rack.

Simple evidence of this can be found on the insurance policy, with its comment “no motive power”, indicating that the Dubost-Colas-Pradel had no electrical supply.

To further encourage the rebirth of the company’s business, its knives were exhibited for the first time at the Lyon Fair in 1950, and then at the Salon des Arts Ménagers à la Défense, in Paris, in 1955.

In 1962, a real visionary driven by his desire to expand the company’s exports, Jean, the son of the founders, crosses the Atlantic and exhibits his goods, first in New York and then in Canada. He is awarded a medal for exports, underlining the dynamic nature of family owned cutlery. The business grows, and now employs 20 people.

In 1966, the company’s growth brought about the first expansion projects (of approximately 400m²) were carried out and a high-voltage transformer substation was installed to provide power to the workshop machinery.
The village however has very little accommodation, already occupied by several generations of local inhabitants, which limits further hiring. The company therefore invests in the construction of two homes to accommodate new employees and their families.

The handles of our "Vintage 80% mini" range are made from at least 80% recycled and reused polypropylene material, from the rebuffs of our own manufacturing workshops. We recover the "carrots" (waste from previous productions), then upcycle them to make new handles. Depending on the waste collected, 80% to 100% are reused for the manufacture of the handles of our "Vintage 80% mini" range. An eco-designed collection in which the material of the handle comes from a 100% circular economy approach within our manufacture and 100% made in our workshops at viscomtat near Thiers capital of French cutlery.

Material recycling and biodegradability - the Line and Natura ranges:

Jean Dubost takes an innovative approach with its 100% recyclable Line and Natura ranges of kitchen and tableware: a 100% recyclable stainless steel blade and a unique handle, the result of advanced research (a project launched in 2008), all to serve the environment. At first, these handles were made from a plant-based bioplastic based on cornstarch, a renewable resource. A range which was recognised in 2018 at the Exclusively Housewares trade fair in London by trend consultancy Scarlet Opus for the Design Trend – ECO 2.0 #ownyourownimpact category: this eco-design category recognises “a new direction and awareness of the eco-design movement, to ensure that each of us becomes aware of our personal impact on the environment and society”.
100% recycled cardboard packaging, printed using natural plant-based inks ensures that the needs of both nature and table lovers are met.

From the beginning of the 2020s, we replace this corn-based material that consumes large quantities of water for its production, by a plant material based on sugar cane waste: that is  biobased certified vegetable biomaterial  *** and industrial OK compost certified : which means biodegradable in an industrial composting center, an alternative to fossil raw materialsis.

Line product sample : Line paring knife, Line steak knife, Line peeler knife
Natura product sample : 100% recyclable case with 3 Laguiole Natura cheese knives - 100% recyclable case with 6 Laguiole Natura steak knives
