Jean Dubost
Pierre Dubost (07/09/1892 – 21/04/1974) and Marcelle Colas Pradel (17/02/1890 – 19/11/1959)
Pierre Dubost and Marcelle Colas-Pradel grew up in the same hamlet in the heart of the dark forests of the Thiers mountain peaks. They were both from families which produced home-made knives for the cutlers of Thiers. Once adults, they decided to marry and leave their families to set up home a few kilometres away, in a small village called Viscomtat, with the intention of starting their own business. In 1920, Pierre Dubost and his wife, Marcelle Colas-Pradel, established their little general cutlery business, which would bear the name of their two families: DUBOST - COLAS - PRADEL. Initially, manufacturing focused on small series of knives intended for professional use.

1920
Their first knives were kitchen knives intended for professionals: paring knives, a butcher’s knife, sticking knife, larding knife, bread knife, cleaver …
The paring knife, with its stainless steel bolster and wooden handle: an iconic knife which has passed through the generations and today still forms part of our 1920 range.
Incidentally, the blades were imprinted with a toucan. This is because at the start of the century, it was a cutlery tradition to associate an animal with your trademark. Pierre Dubost and his wife therefore opted for this well-known bird, with its long, sharp beak.

1924
Pierre began researching bevelling (bevelled blades are ground with zero bevel to create the sharp edge); this manufacturing stage could not be done by Pierre and Marcelle in Viscomtat, because the village did not yet have electricity. The blades were therefore sharpened in Thiers, on the banks of the Durolle river. Pierre would collect the blades by bicycle, folding them into jute bags hanging from the rack.
Simple evidence of this can be found on the insurance policy, with its comment “no motive power”, indicating that the Dubost-Colas-Pradel had no electrical supply.
1928
Mr René Beaujeu, a man of real passion, built a hydroelectric power plant on the dam over the La Semaine river, enabling the supply of power to the village of Viscomtat.
This newfound modernity allowed the company to equip itself with its first machinery in 1928, and hence to expand its activities.
An addendum to the insurance contract in 1928 mentions the use of a 3 hp electric motor.

1945-1950
After the war, in 1945-46, the company almost closed down. The immediate post-war period was a time of abject misery, and it was no longer possible to make a living with cutlery. Jean had already considered taking over a service station in a neighbouring département, but could not bear to see the company close down. The two brothers (Jean and Noël) therefore moved to Paris, and travelled across France in search of customers.
In 1949, their efforts paid off, and the company began to supply the major Parisian department stores: BHV, Printemps: The accounts book for 1949, showing sales of “Scout” daggers to Galeries Lafayette / BHV and Model 23 monoblock table knives to BHV: with handles of bubinga or rosewood, as well as their first plastic handles, using Bakelite. Bakelite was invented at the start of the 20th century, and was the first plastic produced on a large scale - it was used in the production of the well-known black plastic telephones, for example.

To further encourage the rebirth of the company’s business, its knives were exhibited for the first time at the Lyon Fair in 1950, and then at the Salon des Arts Ménagers à la Défense, in Paris, in 1955.
1950-55 The post-war years
The ranges expand, and the first export sales come in: a “marine” knife, machete for Madagascar, “coupe coupes” and “sabres”, hunting knives, mainly for export to Africa, for sugar cane cultivation; the handles were wrapped in twine, and the blades were oiled before sea shipping to prevent seawater corrosion. At the same time, the first table knives were sold to Lebanon.

1962
In 1962, a real visionary driven by his desire to expand the company’s exports, Jean, the son of the founders, crosses the Atlantic and exhibits his goods, first in New York and then in Canada. He is awarded a medal for exports, underlining the dynamic nature of family owned cutlery. The business grows, and now employs 20 people.

1966
In 1966, the company’s growth brought about the first expansion projects (of approximately 400m²) were carried out and a high-voltage transformer substation was installed to provide power to the workshop machinery.
The village however has very little accommodation, already occupied by several generations of local inhabitants, which limits further hiring. The company therefore invests in the construction of two homes to accommodate new employees and their families.
1968
The arrival of the first refrigerators in households means that a butter knife or spreader is now indispensable!

1968-1973
In 1968, Pierre is widowed, and his two sons, Jean and Noël, together with their respective wives, Marceline and Roselle, create a partnership always called DUBOST – COLAS – PRADEL. They jointly manage the business, while they continue to work in the workshops, at the polishing or assembly stations.
1973 sees the construction of “modern and functional” offices.
1970
In the 1970s, the flatware ranges expand. The company’s 57 flatware with acetate handles becomes very successful. This plastic material is not homogeneous during the production process, giving it a slightly “bleached”, horn-like appearance.
Another flatware model: the 4SR (brass bolster and rivets, bubinga wood handle), a 1970s cutlery highlight thanks to its extraordinary popularity.

1979
The ABS Biton flatware model is created using a dual plastic-injection process. Jean Dubost was the first cutlery company to develop the know-how for injecting bi-tone (2-colour) plastic: a first injection creates the first part of the handle (the rivets and bolsters in the photo opposite) while a second injection then creates the handle overmould (in white or grey in the photo opposite).
Thanks to their success with acetate in the 1980s, the 57 flatware range now became available with an ABS handle: a French style blade, ivory ABS handle, and double ferrule. An entire range of serving accessories has also been developed (ladle, slotted spoon …) The model was then offered with a motif (here, an Anglais 57 model fork with cloth motif is shown, although sailcloth or net motifs were also available) flatware with ABS handle with heat stamp.
An iconic flatware model.

Eco-responsibility and sustainable development at Jean Dubost
As a company, Jean Dubost is based within a special natural area in the heart of the Thiers mountain range, and works on a daily basis to preserve its environment and natural resources.
All of our cardboard packaging is sorted and upgraded with a view to reuse. The same applies to the rejects (the so-called “carrots”) from our plastics workshop, which are assessed and upgraded, thus creating zero waste. We limit transportation by combining shipments in order to optimise vehicle loading rates and limit our carbon impact. Jean Dubost has also invested in high performance or water management systems to drastically reduce its water consumption, since its workshops are now fitted with circuits for recycling this resource which is so precious to humanity.
Each year we dedicate a major portion of our investments to research and development in the field of sustainable development. Our teams are always on the lookout for innovative, renewable natural materials, while taking into account their development, environment and life cycle. The first cutlery manufacturer to be PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified, in 2009, for the sustainable management of forests, Jean Dubost is accelerating its development in the area of eco-responsibility by introducing new ranges which are in harmony with nature.

Jean Dubost was awarded PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certification in 2009. The wood selected by Jean Dubost for our oak handles comes from trees which originate from sustainable forestry programmes. These programmes undertake, amongst other things, to plant more trees than they cut down. Each handle for our flatware and kitchen knives is PEFC-labelled.
